District donates more surplus items to REDI community partners

PALATKA, Fla., May 19, 2017 -- Five communities were notified last week that they will receive a variety of all-terrain vehicles, computers and field equipment from the St. Johns River Water Management District's program to donate surplus equipment to economically disadvantaged Rural Economic Development Initiative (REDI) communities.

"Our goal is to be a good neighbor by sharing surplus items with our REDI community partners," said St. Johns River Water Management District Executive Director Dr. Ann Shortelle. "The surplus program is a great way to help these vital rural communities improve services to their constituents. We're glad to be able to lend a helping hand."

Current surplus donations include:

  • The city of Flagler Beach will receive a 2008 Yamaha ATV, a 2002 galvanized trailer and six laptop computers.
  • The city of Hawthorne will receive a 2006 Chevy Silverado and a forklift.
  • The city of Palatka will receive three 50-gallon spraying systems, a 200-gallon spraying system, a Caterpillar vibratory roller, a John Deere road grader, an IBM typewriter and a small cash box.
  • The town of Pomona Park last Friday received a John Deere ATV and a fire-proof cabinet.
  • The city of Umatilla will receive a 2009 Yamaha ATV.

The district routinely disposes of items that are obsolete, serve no useful function, are uneconomical or inefficient for continued use, or have exceeded their useful service life.

A REDI community is economically disadvantaged and may also be unincorporated federal enterprise communities, or an incorporated rural city that is not located in a designated rural county. Funding for REDI communities may be used to sustain and enhance safe drinking water supplies as well as maintain and enhance wastewater systems. For more information about REDI funding opportunities, visit the district's website at www.sjrwmd.com/funding/FY2015-2016/REDI.html.
