What is geocaching?

Geocaching can be an exciting way to explore lands preserved by the St. Johns River Water Management District. Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a global positioning system (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called “geocaches” or “caches”). A typical cache is a small waterproof container that includes a logbook, and possibly some small trinkets. Geocaching is most often described as a “game of high-tech hide and seek,” sharing many aspects with orienteering and treasure-hunting.

A permit is required to establish a geocache site on property owned or managed by the District. A maximum of 12 geocache sites is allowed for each property. Individuals may apply for up to four sites per property, and may include those four sites on one application. If your application is rejected, it may be because the maximum number of geocache sites has been reached for that property.

To apply for a geocache permit, please provide the requested information in the form that is accessed from the "Make an application" link at top. The District’s Division of Land Management will respond to your application with an e-mail within about two weeks informing you of a decision. Submitting an application does not constitute establishment of an official geocache site so applicants must wait to receive word from the District prior to establishing a geocache site. Persons interested in establishing a geocache site also should submit no more than one application at a time and wait to be informed of a decision regarding that application before submitting another application.
