PALATKA, Fla., March 2, 2010 -- Students at Glen Springs Elementary School and their parents are invited to "Splash into Science Night," a hands-on, interactive family event focusing on the importance of Florida's water resources.
Splash into Science Night, scheduled for Thursday, March 4, is an activity sponsored by the St. Johns River Water Management District's Watershed Action Volunteer (WAV) Program, Alachua County Environmental Protection Department, and Gainesville Clean Water Partnership.
Families are encouraged to join students at the two-hour event, which will begin at 6 p.m. at the school cafeteria, located at 2826 N.W. 31st Ave., Gainesville.
Students will learn about the water cycle, how water moves through the aquifer, and about water conservation through a variety of crafts and games. The evening's activities include live animal demonstrations by Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo, playing water games, conducting water experiments, and making water cycle wristbands, an "edible aquifer" and "fish print" T-shirts.
Through this fun family event, students will learn about groundwater, which comes from the Floridan aquifer, the area's primary source of drinking water, and how to reduce stormwater pollution from entering local waterways.
