Tom Lawton Recreation Area to reopen Sept. 8

PALM BAY, Fla., Sept. 2, 2009 - Following a yearlong closure, the St. Johns River Water Management District will reopen access to Tom Lawton Recreation Area in south Brevard County on Sept. 8.

Tom Lawton Recreation Area, located at the west end of Malabar Road in Palm Bay, has been closed due to levee construction being performed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The levee construction is part of the ongoing restoration work being performed in the headwaters of the St. Johns River. The recreation area provides access for hunting, hiking, bicycling and related recreational activities within the Three Forks Marsh Conservation Area. Park hours are 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Hunting season hours are from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset.

Contact Douglas Voltolina, a District land manager, at (321) 676-6614 or dvoltolina@sjrwmd.com. Visit www.sjrwmd.com/recreationguide to learn more about recreational opportunities on District land.
