District seeks volunteers for work at Trimble Park in Mount Dora
PALATKA, Fla., Aug. 13, 2009 - The St. Johns River Water Management District's Watershed Action Volunteer (WAV) Program is seeking volunteers to assist in removing invasive plants from Trimble Park in Mount Dora on Aug. 29.
WAVs will work at the park, located at 5802 Trimble Park Road in Mount Dora, to remove air potato vines from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Air potato, a native of Asia, is an invasive species in Florida, displacing native plants and disrupting natural cycles. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has listed air potato as a noxious plant since 1999 because it can quickly engulf native vegetation.
Persons who wish to volunteer should contact the WAV Program by e-mail at wavorange@sjrwmd.com prior to Aug. 29 so organizers know the number of volunteers to expect. Volunteers earning community service time will receive credit for travel time.
