Apopka volunteer recognized with Bob Owens Award
PALATKA, Fla., June 9, 2009 - Mark Miller, a volunteer who has spent countless hours assisting in the training of educators about water resources, was recognized today by the St. Johns River Water Management District's Governing Board with its 2009 Bob Owens Award.
Much of Miller's efforts have focused on the District's The Great Water OdysseySM and Project WET (Water Education for Teachers). The Great Water OdysseySM is an interactive, multidisciplinary educational experience, available free to educators in the District. Project WET is an interdisciplinary curricula supplement for grades pre-kindergarten through 12. Since being trained as a facilitator, Miller has volunteered his time to help revise the programs' facilitator manuals and training procedures, making them more relevant for new and inexperienced facilitators.
"Mark is a dynamic workshop facilitator who has worked tirelessly to promote District programs," said Eileen Tramontana, education and volunteer manager for the District.
Other 2009 Bob Owens Award recipients are Danny Bales of Titusville and John Fergus of Satellite Beach.
The annual District award is named for the late Bob Owens of Ormond Beach, a vocal supporter of environmental programs who attended nearly every District Governing Board meeting from the mid-1970s until his death in 1991.
