Events enable students to raise awareness about water
PALATKA, Fla., March 26, 2009 - Two events sponsored by the St. Johns River Water Management District's Watershed Action Volunteer (WAV) Program in Volusia County will enable students to raise awareness about Florida's water resources.
The first event, a "Walk for Water," is scheduled for March 27 at Blue Lake Elementary School in DeLand. Groups of students will walk in 30-minute increments - beginning about 9:30 a.m. - in acknowledgement of those who do not have access to sanitary water. Money pledged by participating students will be donated by the school to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). One of the core missions of UNICEF is to provide children all over the world with sanitary drinking water.
On March 28, 40 members of Stetson University's Delta Sigma Phi fraternity will participate in a beach cleanup from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Frank Rendon Park in Daytona Beach Shores.
The fraternity has participated in several environmental projects in the past, including work at Hontoon Island in DeLand after hurricanes ravaged the park, adopting a road, a cleanup at Canaveral Shores beach and work at Gemini Springs.
