Canine lovers can learn how to protect the lagoon
PALATKA, Fla., Feb. 25, 2008 - A free event for dog owners and their pets will be held March 7 at Palm Bay Regional Park's off-leash dog park.
The St. Johns River Water Management District's Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program, city of Palm Bay and Brevard County Parks and Recreation are sponsoring the "Run and Fun" party to encourage responsible dog ownership and to educate pet owners about the importance of cleaning up and disposing of pet waste. Dog waste has been found to be a contributing factor to bacterial pollution in the Indian River Lagoon. Rain often washes pet waste left on trails, sidewalks, streets and grassy areas into the nearest storm drain, many of which flow to canals that drain directly into the lagoon.
Attendees will be eligible for door prizes and will receive pet waste bag dispensers during the event, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Water and dog treats will be available for all pooches.
Pet clubs, pet care and training centers will have staff available to answer questions and give advice on dog care and behavior. A number of pet rescue groups will be bringing some of their adoptable dogs to the event; and several pet artists will be on hand to showcase their artwork. Participating organizations include:
