Lagoon water supply salinity study project meeting May 12

PALATKA, Fla., May 2, 2005 — The St. Johns River Water Management Districtwill hold a project meeting about its project titled "Evaluation of PotentialImpacts of Demineralization Concentrate Discharge to the Indian River Lagoon(IRL Salinity Study)." The meeting will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2005,from 10 a.m. to noon at the Port St. John Library, 6500 Carole Ave., Cocoa,Fla.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide information about the project anddiscuss the initial draft of the Environmental Assessment Methodology document.

The IRL Salinity Study focuses on two potential sites for demineralization(desalination) plants collocated at existing power plants in Brevard County. The study will help estimate the quantities of water available to be withdrawnfrom the Indian River Lagoon in the vicinity of Port St. John, and help estimatethe effects of discharging demineralization concentrate at the same location(s).

The two potential collocation sites for demineralization plants were identifiedas potential projects during the District’s East-Central Florida Water SupplyPlanning Initiative Phase II process and the Seawater Demineralization FeasibilityInvestigation. The IRL Salinity Study is a further investigation of the feasibilityof these potential projects.
