PALATKA, Fla., Nov. 11, 2003 — The University of Florida will installa temporary data collection tower on Newnans Lake next week to providewater quality information to the St. Johns River Water Management District.
The metal tower will provide the District with information on waterquality changes in the lake. The data collected will help water managersmake well-informed decisions to improve water quality and fish and wildlifehabitats in Newnans Lake.
The tower, located between Palm Point and the Windsor boat ramp, willbe equipped with electrical sensors to measure wind speed, water temperature,water clarity and sediment re-suspension at several depths. A battery-powerednavigation light and brightly colored warning signs will be installedto alert boaters to the tower’s location.
Boaters are encouraged to maintain a safe distance of at least 50 feetfrom the tower to prevent hazardous contact with electrical equipment.
The tower will remain in place for about one year.
