NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla., April 10, 2002 — Reduce your monthly water bill by trading in yourold showerhead for a low-flow model on April 16.
The Volusian WaterAlliance is celebrating its second annual April Water Conservation MonthOpen House with a showerhead exchange program that offers free low-flowshowerheads to those who turn in their old water-guzzling showerheads.
Low-flow showerheads,required under the National Energy Policy Act of 1992, save water andthe energy to heat the water. The maximum flow rate for all showerheadson the market since 1994 is 2.5 gallons per minute. In contrast, manyolder showerheads may use as much as five gallons per minute.
About 10,000 showerheadshave already been exchanged through this program, saving an estimated33 million gallons of water every year. During the upcoming open house,another 1,000 showerheads will be exchanged. The St. Johns River WaterManagement District and Alliance member utilities shared the $22,500 costof the original 10,000 showerheads, the largest such exchange in Florida.
